Astropoetry on the Peaks

The nearest points to the sky and its astral treasures
are the peaks.
Mountain peaks are earthly beams,
peaceful replies to the celestial beams.

What a chance to be a part of these
happy meetings of light!
What a chance to be a man in the middle of these
cosmic handshakes!

Astropoetry on the Peaks (pdf)
by Andrei Dorian Gheorghe

Bucegi mountains have a main altitude of 2513 m (not 2509 as in the manual...) on the Omu Peak, detaching them from all the massif that surround it. The unique shape of this mountains, dominated by huge walls, as much as 1500 m tall, makes Bucegi one of the main attractions for mountaineers. This massif offers challenges for every type of mountaineers, from climbers, hikers and backpackers to skiers and week-end trippers.

About the Reading

In July, 1987, about 30 young people celebrated their graduation of the Economic Academy-Bucharest. Their poet, Andrei Dorian Gheorghe. On March 30 2002, twenty-three economists from that former group of students celebrated their jubilee of 15 years by climbing Vapor cabane, Azuga station (1000m altitude), Prahova Valley, Bucegi Mountains, Central Carphatians. Andrei Dorian Gheorghe gave an astropoetry performance (duration of 20 minutes, including a short speech, a few astropoems and 10 lyrical astroproverbs, and moments of astral dumbshows- using Mihai Dumitrescu's electronic music).

On May 11, during their astronomical-photographical workshop at the Vanatorul (Hunter) Camp (950m alt.), Mountain Bucegi, Central (Meridional) Carphatians, The Romanian Society for Meteors and Astronomy-SARM organized an astroart show for the Poetry on the Peaks program. This show had 5 main heros: Valentin Grigore (organizer), Andrei Dorian Gheorghe (coordinator), Dan Mitrut (cantauthor of astrofolk music), Calin Niculae (photographer) and Tina Visarian (astrodrawer), and 3 parts:

1. At a waterfall (1050m alt.) on the Ialomita River, where Andrei Dorian Gheorghe made the introduction (accompanied at guitar by Dan Mitrut).

2. In a natural amphitheatre (1100m alt.), in which Andrei Dorian Gheorghe spoke about the Neruda on Mercury program and Pablo Neruda's personality, and read Poem 10 by the Chili Poet; after that, he presented the Poetry on the Peaks program and read a poem entitled Astronomy (for which 25 Romanian astropoets contributed with one verse), and Dan Mitrut sang his compositions, The Sky Legend and A Carol from the Hourglass Nebula.

3. At the club of the Vanatorul Camp, when Tina Visarian realized an exhibition of astrodrawings, Valentin Grigore (accompanied at guitar by Calin Niculae) presented projections of international astrophotographs (some of them being by himself), and Dan Mitrut sang his music and lyrics on Calin Niculae's computer art and photographic projections.

The main purpose of SARM's activity is promoting the public outreach of astronomy and meteor observations, at national and international level, through cooperation in about 40 countries.
