Mount Kilimanjaro

We can't help being thirsty, moving toward
the voice of water. Milk drinkers draw close
to the mother. Muslims, Christians, Jews,
Buddhists, Hindus, shamans, everyone hears
the intelligent sound and moves with thirst to
meet it.

Mt. Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro rises majestically from a rolling plain close to the Indian Ocean from hot savanna to a barren and frigid 3.5-mile high peak. It is the highest mountain in Africa and one of the largest free standing mountains in the world.

Kilimanjaro National Park takes in the area above the 8,850 feet (2,700 meters) on the mountain. It includes the moorland and highland zones, Shira Plateau, Kinbo and Mawenzi peaks. In addition, the Park has six corridors or rights of way through Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve. The Forest Reserve is also a Game Reserve established in 1921; the Park was established inn 1973 and officially opened in 1977.

Kilimanjaro stands a scant 205 miles south of the equator, on the northern boundary of Tanzania. Its location on an open plain close to the Indian Ocean, and its great size and height strongly influence the climate, vegetation, animal life and the climbing conditions. It is made up of three distinct volcanoes: Kibo 19,340 feet (5,895 meters); Mawenzi 16,896 feet (5,149 meters); and Shira 13,000 feet (3,962 meters).

Rumi was born in Balkh (Afghanistan) in 1207 to a family of learned Persian theologians. Escaping the Mongol invasion and destruction, Rumi and his family traveled extensively in the Muslim lands, performed pilgrimage to Mecca and finally settled in Konya, Anatolia, then part of Seljuk Empire. When his father Bahaduddin Valad passed away, Rumi succeeded his father in 1231 as professor in religious sciences. Rumi, 24 years old, was an already accomplished scholar in religious and positive sciences. He was introduced into the mystical path by a wandering dervish, Shamsuddin of Tabriz. His love and his bereavement for the death of Shams found their expression in a surge of music, dance and lyric poems, `Divani Shamsi Tabrizi'. Rumi is the author of six volume didactic epic work, the `Mathnawi', called as the 'Koran in Persian' by Jami, and discourses, `Fihi ma Fihi', written to introduce his disciples into metaphysics. Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi died on December 17, 1273. Men of five faiths followed his bier. That night was named Sebul Arus (Night of Union). Ever since, the Mawlawi dervishes have kept that date as a festival.
